GYPSY, ROMA, TRAVELLER, HISTORY MONTH
In June 2009 the company worked with BVSNW to successfully bring the first celebration of Gypsy, Roma, Traveller History Month to Wales involving 250 participants including 200 people from Gypsy, Roma, Traveller communities from across Newport, Cardiff, Powys, Bridgend and Pembrokeshire.
The event was facilitated by a number of people drawn from the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller communities allowing us to conduct a consultation with participants and an evaluation of the event. Most of the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller participants were women, children or young people. Participants were overwhelmingly in support of the event, in particular:
- People were surprised by how good it was
- Would like it repeated
- Wondered if there were similar events elsewhere
- Expressed an interest in becoming more involved in preparing the event
Barrera, 2009
The event was covered by Radio Cardiff community radio station, BBC Radio Wales (The Roy Noble Show) and the BBC Wales website
The work was also reported on at the Welsh Assembly Government’s Conference ‘Moving Forward’ (16th October 2009).
2010 will see a significant increase in the celebrations as the Welsh Assembly and the people of Newport join us:
1. Gypsy, Roma, Traveller History Month 2010 will be launched at the Senedd on Thursday 27th May hosted by Helen Mary Jones AM, Chair of the Assembly’s Children & Young People’s Committee
2. The Newport GRT HM event, which is free, will take place at the Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre on 17th June 2010 (10am until 2 pm) featuring history and art, theatre and dance, children’s and adult performances.
3. The Cardiff GRT HM event will take place at the Pierhead Building in Cardiff Bay on 29th June 2010 (10am until 2 pm). The event, which is free, will provide a range of workshops and performances bringing together traditional crafts and performances.
